Junior Hockey Training Sessions
Training starts 2017/18 season from Tuesday 12 September 2016
Youth training for all players younger than 12 is completely FREE!! Our thanks to Walthamstow Academy and all our volunteers at Waltham Forest Hockey Club for making this possible!
Aged 8-12 – junior hockey training sessions run on Tuesday evenings 7pm-8:15pm (September to May each year). Free. In summer months we run knock-arounds / coached fun matches for the kids every fortnight (roughly) on Saturday mornings…
Aged 12-16 Training is on Thursday evenings, 7pm to 8.15pm. Players in school Year 8 and above pay an annual membership of £50. From aged 13 players are also eligible to join adult teams – or may prefer to continue in the U14 youth teams until “ready”!
The U14 teams are entered into a league that plays on Sundays: The girls are the “Wolves” and play in the Home Counties League. The boys are the “Grasshoppers” and play in the Mercian League
Over 14s are encouraged to join the adult side of the club where we have development teams to help them with the transition. This involves training on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 8pm to 10pm (depending on which adult team they join). Membership is £50 per year
This season (2017/18) will also include a girls Under 16 team playing matches!
What you’ll need:
- Astro trainers – or trainers with very good grips
- A hockey stick! But don’t worry if you don’t have one – we have plenty you can borrow on the day
- Shin pads and a gum shield (£3-4 from most sports shops)
The Vidzone is a monthly hockey video to inspire or motivate, teach or entertain. Please get your kids to take a look!
TournamentsWe currently enter u10, u12 and u14 tournaments within the Essex Mini League and arrange friendlies for u8.
For dates take a look on Junior Calendar page (actual calendar feature not working!)
Youth AwardsThe club awards two main awards to youth players each season:
Most Improved Youth Player – to the player who has shown the greatest improvement this season.
Youth Player of the Season – to the player who has excelled at hockey, both in terms of ability but also in terms of effort, attitude and generally being recognised as a great member of the WF youth section.
Here is a list of previous & current Award winners and also the adult club’s Roll of Honour.
We are also part of the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards scheme with an award being given out every month during the season xc. These can be awarded to anyone between 11 and 25 and are nominated by anyone within the club.
